LALIZAS Hosts Maritime Safety Summit 2025 in Response to New IMO Regulations on Onboard Foam Systems

2025-05-09 | LALIZAS Hosts Maritime Safety Summit 2025 in Response to New IMO Regulations on Onboard Foam Systems

A dynamic gathering of key members of the maritime community took place from May 5 to 6 at the LaLiBay Resort & Spa, on Aegina Island, as LALIZAS proudly hosted the Maritime Safety Summit 2025.

With participants from across the maritime industry, including technical departments of ship owning and ship management companies, classification societies, and media, this two-day event served as a key meeting point for exploring the latest regulatory developments, networking, and reinforcing a shared commitment to maritime safety.

The discussions focused on the new regulatory framework for foam firefighting fixed systems and portable devices, by IMO’s MSC 532(107) upcoming ban of PFOS/PFOA materials.

New Regulatory Requirements:
The IMO, through resolution MSC 532(107) adopted on June 8, 2023, prohibits the use of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) in fixed and portable firefighting systems. Compliance becomes mandatory from January 1, 2026, during a vessel’s first scheduled survey. Similarly, the European Union banned perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) effective July 4, 2020, with an adaptation period ending in July 2025.

Michalis Loupasakis – Maritime Sales Director at LALIZAS, provided thorough explanation of the new regulatory requirements and presented detailed guidance on how to effectively tackle them through a comprehensive service package offered by LALIZAS.

Participants expressed a great interest in gaining a deeper understanding of the IMO’s new requirements and acquiring the knowledge necessary to manage them more efficiently.

During this 2-day event, we had the opportunity to welcome and meet again with many of our esteemed partners, strengthening our collaboration and spending quality time together. A welcome reception was held on Monday for those whose schedules permitted, and lunch followed the presentation on Tuesday.

It was a perfect blend of business and pleasure at the unique setting of Aegina Island, which offered an ideal backdrop for both learning and networking.

A thank you to all the companies that dedicated their time and actively participated, including:
